Mountain ReflectionsAdvent I've celebrated Advent for a long, long time... know the songs from my tradition by heart, heard many, many sermons. In other words, "I've been around the Christianity block some." But do you know the one moment I remember from all the years? I was sitting in a late-night Christmas Eve service next to a young mom and her young baby... and, well, the baby was fussing, like babies do, and the mom was doing her best to be there and not be a distraction. We were singing some well-known traditional songs, and we got to the verse "no crying He makes" (baby Jesus), and I leaned over to the tired young mom and whispered, "I'll bet He did!" I hope that mom walked away from that Christmas Eve service with a sense of God seeing her, and maybe I didn't really understand it then, but I think God showed up for me in Advent too. So my question for this Advent season is: Why did God show up as a human baby? I mean, they are messy, noisy, disruptive, smelly, costly, a real long-term project, and also huge gifts. (I confess I've only had puppies, not babies.) Why didn't God skip over that part, being divine... I mean, what did God experience about humanity when He learned to go potty, or walk, be silly, spit up, or speak, cry, laugh, fall down, play, get mad, have an amazing distinct personality, see the world for the first time as a baby who develops and grows? What does Jesus' humanity have to do with our own? And what do "pooping" and "silliness," for example, have to do with the grand design of salvation, ushering in the Kingdom of God, establishing peace and justice, healing our broken world? What can we learn about being human from Jesus in order for us to get to know the Creator a bit more? Yeah, Advent—God with us. Author: Hanna Bear |
